In my time with the Artesia Literacy Council, I have had the privilege of helping people obtain their citizenship. As I have helped them study for the exam, I too have learned about our country. I am proud of my young citizens taking part in the American system by voting and being involved in our country.
In the tumultuous responses to some of the recent actions of Congress or decisions of the Supreme Court, I am saddened by the ignorance shown by citizens in their reactions. Our government is tripartite, meaning made up of three parts. The Supreme Court is not supposed to "make law." This was the focus of the decision as explained by Justice Alito. People in other branches are trying to nullify the court because they don't like the decision. Instead, they need to pass legislation, "make law," to change the laws. Members of Congress on both sides try to negate their opponents or to change law without appropriate action. They were elected by us to do what we want them to do. Sadly, they often ignore the quiet majority for the loud minority. Views different from those minority shouters are denigrated as "inhumane, lower intelligence, and obviously wrong." When those on the other side believe their views are compassionate, wise, and right.
As the new citizens have learned, the American government is designed to allow for change if it's done in the proper manner. We are not governed by intimidation or threats any more than were our founders.
Vote, contact your representatives when you see a problem. Be a part of the solution, not one of those who stand on the sidelines and gripe.
